Dear Parents,

Each week we will send a list of words that will focus on a particular spelling pattern. It is valuable for students to learn patterns and how to phonetically sound out words rather than simply memorize a short list of words for a test. The skills will continue to build upon the previous weeks’ skills and increase in difficulty. Brainstorm more words with your child that matches the week’s pattern in preparation for the test on Friday’s. While a list has been supplied for studying, additional words that match the pattern will also be on the test.

 Frequently used sight words will also be included. These words often cannot be spelled phonetically. These are words used frequently and are often referred to as “sight words.” Students have to memorize them. (These may repeat throughout the year to ensure mastery.)

 Finally, students will be asked to write a complete sentence read aloud by their teacher. These sentences will incorporate words learned from the current week or previous weeks to demonstrate their ability to spell words in context.
