    'Moby Dick' sails on...

One-act play to compete at bi-district in Seminole

The cast and crew of DCHS’s ‘Moby Dick, Rehearsed’ will compete at the bi-district competition in Seminole on Tuesday, March 20th at 5:00 p.m. They earned the right to represent District 2-4A by advancing from the district contest last week.

The play, written by Orson Welles, is set in a modern American repertory theater. It begins subtly with the cast milling around an empty stage. The cast members generally fool around and complain about their boss and their forthcoming production of ‘King Lear’. Then, the manager arrives and tells them they are going to rehearse a version of ‘Moby Dick’ that he has been adapting for the stage. The cast grudgingly performs the play, improvising scenery from items lying around, and gradually gets more into character as the play develops. By doing so, they portray the crew of the whaling ship, Pequod, as it desperately searches for Moby Dick.

At the district contest, freshman Sawyer Davis was awarded Best Actor, while junior Brandon Cruz was selected to the All-Star Cast and freshman Karley Moore was named to the Honorable Mention All-Star cast. All three are appearing in their first high school UIL One-act play production.

The company of ‘Moby Dick, Rehearsed’, under the direction of Ms. Gloria McLuckie and Mrs. Melisa Dorsett is comprised of: Brandon Cruz, Kailee Galyon, Cris Escalante, Cheyenne Beach, Ramon Zubiate, Alma Ramirez, Elizabeth Valverde, Karley Moore, Jasmine Lopez, Damien Pena, Brenevyn Diaz, Sawyer Davis, Annabelle Duke, Kinsey Michaelson, Odalys Rodriguez, Lilyan Whaley, Kirsten Freeman and Dakoda Howard.

The bi-district contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Seminole High School’s Performing Arts Center. The schools involved (in order of performance) are: Levelland HS performing ‘Silent Sky’; Perryton HS performing ‘Tracks’’; Borger HS performing ‘Refugee Women’; Dalhart HS performing ‘Twelve Angry Women’’; Seminole HS performing ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’; followed by Denver City.
